Dr. Rothbaum was trained at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore and The Beck Institute of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Research in Philadelphia. He has had additional training at the Cognitive Therapy Center in NYC for many years under the guidance of Dr. Jeffrey Young, the founder of schema therapy. Dr. Rothbaum traveled to Europe to study medicine and successfully graduated in 1980. His studies included 5 years of residency training - internal medicine and psychiatry

Dr. Rothbaum has an exceptionally broad background in treating psychological disorders, including such problems as: anxiety and depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, SAD, personality disorders, schizophrenia, and couples issues. He has extensive training in the use of new and more effective psychotherapies. These therapies include: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for acute problems and schema therapy for more difficult to treat disorders, and chronic mood and anxiety conditions, as well as personality disorders. Medications is also offered when appropriate. It is unique to find a psychiatrist able to provide this range of services.

In addition to his 25 years in private practice, Dr. Rothbaum devotes time to teaching at various medical institutions. This year marks the doctor's 4th year of teaching psychotherapy at the Georgetown University Medical School in the department of psychiatry, where he recently was selected as "Teacher of the Year ". He has held positions at other medical schools and universities including, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. Over his career, Dr. Rothbaum has also worked for Sinai Hospital and Springfield State Hospital both in Maryland.


Philosophy

Dr. Rothbaum employs several different psychotherapies as well as medication management, when indicated, to provide patients with relief from their illness. These tools are as much of an art as they are a science - Dr. Rothbaum has spent many years refining them. However, learning new psychotherapies that are more effective, evidence based, and brief are necessary to provide patients with the best possible up to date care. The doctor's career is devoted to learning and caring for his patients.
