Philosophy

Dr. Rothbaum employs several different psychotherapies as well as medication management, when indicated, to provide patients with relief from their illness. These tools are as much of an art as they are a science - Dr. Rothbaum has spent many years refining them. However, learning new psychotherapies that are more effective, evidence based, and brief are necessary to provide patients with the best possible up to date care. The doctor's career is devoted to learning and caring for his patients.

Dr. Rothbaum works to create, and maintain, close working relationships with his patients - this encourages a healthy collaborative patient-doctor working team. Patients know that if they need to reach him, he will be available. Doctors must learn to carefully listen to their patients and he has been trained to do so while at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Research (the premier site in the US for training in CBT). At the end of each session, patients are ask to offer feedback concerning any problems with their treatment.

The doctor tries to keep the duration of therapy as short as possible. Patients find this encouraging, as most do not want to remain in therapy for years. Dr. Rothbaum is active and practical with patients. There are no extended periods of silence. Patients are provided with weekly assignments to foster independent work between sessions and learning how to practice CBT on their own. The doctor offers to meet with families in order to discuss the nature of the problem, possible solutions, and how they may be of help. The doctor's career is devoted to learning, caring for his patients, and teaching. He works at maintaining his professional integrity, and as such, he has no contracts with any pharmaceutical companies.
